Thief or Therapist? Dr. Gachet treated artists in exchange for art. Who was he and why did he do it?
This is one of the most famous Van Gogh paintings, but who was this man? Just north of Paris is the home of Paul Gachet, the last place Van Gogh lived. Who was this Dr. Gachet? Did he really help Van Gogh or just exploit him to take his paintings? Come with me to explore not just where Van Gogh, Degas, Monet, Pissarro, and Cézanne were treated, but to also hear the story of a man who made many of their famous works possible.
-------Be sure to check out my episode at St Remy where Van Gogh painted Starry Night!

      In many ways you are very correct! I don't think there are any artists out there who would tackle something like he did in the conditions he worked in. It's just amazing to also see a city so incredibly supportive to artists. THAT may never exist again!

      I would like to add. Ask anyone, anywhere, to name one artist they may know. One name will invariably be mentioned. He was a Rock Star par excellence. Image if you also asked someone to name a contemporary artist? You will not get the same universal response. No other artist, before or since, has this find of fame and notoriety. It is exclusive to him.

      Hi Jay in Pakistan! I cannot tell you how much this message means to me, and your timing could not be better. Knowing what I'm creating is helping students and educators like yourself outside of the US is priceless. As we keep hunting for more financial support, feedback like this not only helps us with grants, but it also keeps me and my team motivated! Please keep inspiring the next generation, and thank you for being an educator! If you and your class ever want to chat art and creativity via Zoom or Google hangout, let me know! Hopefully one day we will make it to Pakistan to film. That would be amazing!

    The design doesn't work because it attempts to meld a sharp-ish cuboid with a flowing arc. And the surface finishes are different between the body and the neck. The faucet has a minimalist aesthetic, but then it has a lump on the side (the real faucet handle). And touch-to-turn-on is the wrong UX paradigm for a device for which you need fine flow control. The head of the faucet is also misleading because it corresponds in no way to the narrow water jet.

      @artrageousnate Місяць тому

      Appreciate the feedback! Yes, you are right. Napoleon never stole the Mona Lisa, and I never mentioned that he did. Of course, Napoleon did steal a TON of other works, which I do have an episode on one of them you should check out! I think most people forget that Da Vinci lived in France sponsored by the French government for the better part of his older years. I was just at his home a couple years ago. I think Perugia was just frustrated about other works that the Louvre had, which were either of Italian origin or stolen. For him, it seemed like more of a stunt for attention than anything else. Either way, the theft most definitely skyrocketed the Mona Lisa into fame, which I think is funny as an art history buff. Just think how many people and ideas are now only famous simply because enough people on Instagram, UA-cam, etc says they are. Food for thought!

      I see what you're saying, but also understand why she became politically active. I guess in some ways she was using her platform of fame to hopefully make greater change for the people and culture she loved. Either way, thanks for watching and the feedback!

    It would've been amazing if the cameras back then were a good as today. Those paintings look really great on HD.

      COMPLETELY agree! It's a shame no one really got to see them in their true, dynamic colors. They really are something special. Thanks for watching and the feedback!

    Where do you get the idea that being a painter was not a suitable profession for a man? Did you mean it was unmanly? Only suitable for milksop boys? Certainly women didnt figure much in any profession except ......that one back then. Except of course for the wonderful Artemisia Gentileschi. Plus several others with whose work I am unfamiliar.
